Road trips with pets
A calm road trip begins before the engine starts. Prepare the vehicle, practise short journeys and build breaks into the route.
Before departure
Check that identification is current and introduce restraints, hammocks or carriers gradually. Pack water, food, medication, cleaning supplies and a familiar blanket where it cannot become a driving hazard.
Secure travel
Choose equipment appropriate to your pet and vehicle, follow manufacturer instructions and comply with applicable road rules. Never connect a vehicle restraint to a collar.
Breaks and hydration
Plan safe stops away from traffic. Offer water regularly, monitor comfort and use a lead before opening doors. Avoid feeding a large meal immediately before travel if your pet experiences motion sickness; ask your veterinarian for individual advice.
Heat awareness
Never leave a pet unattended in a parked vehicle. Cabin temperatures can rise rapidly even on mild days.
At the destination
Check boundaries, hazards, local wildlife and nearby veterinary services before allowing your pet to explore.
